1. What is Sarvam STT?
Sarvam Speech-to-Text (STT) is an automatic speech recognition (ASR) platform built specifically for Indian languages. Sarvam specializes in regional accents, code-mixed speech, and the multilingual conversations that are normal across the Indian subcontinent. Sarvam’s current generation is the Saaras family. A single Saaras model both transcribes in the original spoken language and translates to English, selected by an output mode, so Sarvam has consolidated everything onto it.saaras:v4 is Sarvam’s latest model and the right default for new Bolna agents.2. Key features of Sarvam STT
- Indian Language Expertise: Trained on Indian language data rather than adapted from an English-first baseline, giving high accuracy on regional accents and code-mixed speech.
- Real-Time Streaming: Built for streaming transcription over WebSocket with low latency, so conversations keep their natural rhythm.
- Code-Mixed Speech Recognition: Handles seamless switching between English and an Indian language inside a single sentence — the common case on Indian phone calls.
- Broad Language Coverage: Sarvam’s Saaras models cover 23 languages — 22 Indian languages plus English.
- Automatic Language Detection: Saaras models can detect the spoken language rather than requiring it up front.
-
Global English Accents:
saaras:v4adds non-Indian English accents on top of Indian English, useful for agents that take calls from abroad. -
Keyterm Prompting:
saaras:v4takes a list of names, places, brands and technical terms to bias recognition towards.
3. How Bolna uses Sarvam for STT
- Real-Time Indian Language Processing: Bolna streams call audio to Sarvam’s realtime STT API and receives transcripts as the caller speaks, so the agent can respond without waiting for the utterance to finish being processed.
- Regional Language Voice Agent Support: Agents handle conversations in Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, and the other supported languages with accuracy that generic multilingual models do not reach on Indian speech.
- Accent-Aware Transcription: Sarvam’s training on diverse Indian accents keeps transcription accurate across regions and demographics.
- Code-Switching Support: Callers who switch between English and a regional language mid-sentence are transcribed correctly, without the agent needing to reconfigure its language.
-
Turn Detection Handled by Bolna:
Endpointing and voice activity detection are Bolna-side settings (
endpointing,vad_threshold,vad_prefix_padding_ms) that apply regardless of transcriber, so you tune them the same way you would for any other provider.
4. List of Sarvam models supported on Bolna AI
Agents still pointing at Sarvam’s older
saaras:v2.5 or saarika:v2.5 keep working, but Sarvam has deprecated both. Move them to saaras:v4.
Sarvam shipped
saaras:v3-realtime in August 2026 for its own WebSocket realtime API. Bolna’s transcriber model field takes saaras:v4 or saaras:v3; use saaras:v4 for new agents.5. Supported languages
Sarvam’s Saaras models support 23 languages — 22 Indian languages plus English.saaras:v4 and
saaras:v3 take the same set.
The codes below are the ones to send today. The first column is what you send as
transcriber.language in the Create Agent API; the second is the
locale Sarvam itself uses, which Bolna resolves for you.
The other 11 Saaras languages
Sarvam’s remaining 11 Indian languages are not yet available through Bolna. Urdu (ur), Nepali (ne), Konkani (kok), Kashmiri (ks), Sindhi (sd), Sanskrit (sa), Santali (sat), Manipuri (mni), Bodo (brx), Maithili (mai) and Dogri (doi) each fail agent creation with 400 Provided language: <language> is not available for the model: <model>, on both saaras:v4 and saaras:v3. Re-verified on saaras:v4 against the live API on 24 September 2026.
6. Configuration
sampling_rate and encoding are set automatically to match your telephony provider — 8 kHz for phone calls, 16 kHz for web calls. See the Create Agent API for every transcriber field.
If you are coming from Sarvam’s own API: Saaras v3 and v4 expose five output modes there —
transcribe, translate, verbatim, translit and codemix. Bolna’s transcriber has no mode field, so every Sarvam agent transcribes in the original spoken language. Sarvam is also not available as an LLM provider on Bolna; pair it with one of the supported LLMs.Keyword and context biasing
Sarvam accepts both of Bolna’s biasing fields.context works on every Saaras model; keywords needs saaras:v4.
keywordsis sent as Sarvam’s keyterms, up to 50 terms of up to 64 characters each. A list over either limit is rejected when you save the agent. Multi-word phrases such asNew Delhicount as one term.- Per-term weights are not supported, so Bolna strips any
term:numbersuffix before sending. contextis sent as Sarvam’s prompt, a plain description of the call rather than a term list.- Both are set when the call connects and apply for the whole call.
On
saaras:v3 and the legacy models, Sarvam has no keyterm support, so the Keywords box is shown disabled in the dashboard and nothing is sent. Keywords already saved on the agent are kept, and apply once you move it to saaras:v4.Bolna transcribes in Sarvam’s
transcribe mode, which writes English words in the native script of the call’s language. On a Hindi agent, a boosted term such as PhonePe can come back in Devanagari rather than Latin script. Sarvam keeps such terms in Latin script only in its codemix mode, which Bolna does not expose. Conclusion
Sarvam’s Saaras models give Bolna accurate, real-time speech-to-text for Indian languages, including the code-switched speech that generic ASR models handle poorly. For agents serving Indian callers, Sarvam is usually the strongest transcriber choice — see the transcriber comparison for how it stacks up against the alternatives. For related integrations:- Pair it with Sarvam TTS for a fully Indic voice pipeline
- Give each language its own transcriber with multilingual support
- You can also connect your own Sarvam account and use it with Bolna AI
